Calculate interior wall surface area

How this wall area calculator works

This wall area calculator is built for quick interior take-offs: you enter the room’s footprint and wall height, and we estimate total vertical surface before finishes. It doubles as a practical wall square footage calculator when you work in feet, and shows metric equivalents so you can quote or buy materials listed in square metres.

Think of it as a focused wall measurement calculator: instead of juggling spreadsheets, you get gross wall area, a sensible deduction for typical doors and windows, and net wall area you can pair with paint coverage, drywall sheets, or wallpaper rolls.

Wall surface formula (four walls)

For a simple rectangular room with constant ceiling height, gross wall area ≈ 2 × (length + width) × wall height. That counts four vertical walls; it excludes the floor and does not automatically include the ceiling.

Net wall area subtracts portions you will not cover—large glazing, built-ins, or tiled backsplashes—using opening counts and default allowances unless you override measurements elsewhere.

Wall square footage vs floor area

Floor square footage is usually length × width. Wall square footage scales with perimeter and height, so a tall stair hall can dwarf a small bedroom floor even when floor areas look similar on a plan.

Always align units: if you measure in metres, confirm suppliers quote wall products in m²; if you shop in sq ft, keep feet consistent through perimeter and height.

Formula (four walls): Gross wall area ≈ 2 × (length + width) × wall height. Net area subtracts typical opening allowances—measure openings precisely for quote-grade take-offs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate wall area for a rectangular room?

Multiply the room perimeter (twice length plus twice width) by wall height to get the four vertical walls. Subtract doors, windows, or large openings you will not finish for net wall area.

Is wall square footage the same as floor square footage?

No. Floor area is length times width. Wall area depends on perimeter times height and ignores the floor plane unless you separately add ceiling square footage.

Does this wall measurement calculator include the ceiling?

No—this tool estimates vertical wall surface only. Add ceiling area separately (typically length times width) if your scope includes it.

How accurate are door and window deductions?

We apply typical default opening sizes for quick estimates. For ordering drywall or wallpaper on tight margins, measure each opening and adjust counts.

Can I switch between feet and metres?

Yes. Choose feet or metres and we keep formulas consistent, showing both square feet and square metres for easy shopping in either unit.
