Wall surface formula (four walls)
For a simple rectangular room with constant ceiling height, gross wall area ≈ 2 × (length + width) × wall height. That counts four vertical walls; it excludes the floor and does not automatically include the ceiling.
Net wall area subtracts portions you will not cover—large glazing, built-ins, or tiled backsplashes—using opening counts and default allowances unless you override measurements elsewhere.
Wall square footage vs floor area
Floor square footage is usually length × width. Wall square footage scales with perimeter and height, so a tall stair hall can dwarf a small bedroom floor even when floor areas look similar on a plan.
Always align units: if you measure in metres, confirm suppliers quote wall products in m²; if you shop in sq ft, keep feet consistent through perimeter and height.
